My twin and I were in the fourth grade, and the local library was a little smaller than it is now. But it had a pretty cool selection anyway, especially those big, full-color, hardback editions of "ElfQuest". I'm not sure what it was that compelled us to check out volume five -the only one there-, but it probably had something to do with the fact we were comic addicts and the art was amazing. (Maybe Mrs. Pini's art is another reason why I like anime so much.) Now, since we didn't jump in at the beginning, some stuff went over our heads; references to past events, why Wolfriders bonded with wolves, why Winnowill was so bad, what Recognition was, stuff like that. But we were hooked anyway on the writing, the action, the novelty and characterization, and we obsessively hunted down other volumes and the Big ElfQuest Gatherum to put the pieces together. From there, we pretty much pledged lifelong loyalty to the World of Two Moons.
