I agree with Lunakat's approach, but a part of the potential players would also probably like to play known characters. However, it's true that it's great fun CREATING characters, with all the possible variety of looks and ways it implies, and the choice for the term "avatar" is more adequate than most old-fashioned video games players like me would even figure. The key would perhaps be some system where the environment exists, where things happen, and where the characters have to interact with it all, to survive those events, to cope with them, to build with them. Not mere "quests", but a large set of events.
