Daughter of Sea and Sun - Korafay

Embala

This close-up from a Final Quest teaser makes me wonder ...

1. Is the bundle Brill huddles the child she is carrying after the Recognition in Discovery?

2. Is it another child from a second Recognition with Sunstream?

3. Is it (possibly) the child of Ember and Teir, adopted after something happened to the parents?

Embala

1. Brill and Sunstream look identical as they were shown in Discovery - so this option would be the most likely. Would end the speculations, whether there will be twins born to the twin-couple.

2. In the same poster Shuna is shown as a very old woman. In case the whole poster is an exact "snapshot" from the storyline, this cubling must be a much younger sibling of Sunstream's and Brill's firstborn child(ren).

3. Not much evidence for it - just fan speculation due to the fact, that Ember and Teir do not show in the poster. And that they will most probably recognize in the Final Quest. And some other teasers hint that something bad might happen to Ember.

Last not least ...

4. This teaser is very possible a collage of scenes, not a snapshot. And as far as I've got it not really new ... so things might have changed in time passing between this picture and the actual writing/drawing up of the Final Quest.

And YES ... this is ALL about fan speculation Wink

I wouldn't think too much over that. It pretty much looks like Sunstream has been copy pasted from Discovery...*fiddles around with ps*
Brill's pose looks familiar too. Not sure tho.

Embala

*takes a closer look* ... pretty much, indeed.

Brings us back to the collage theory ... and to suggestion #1 Wink

. Look how both full of hope and concerned and worried Brill and Sunstream look
. Remind that Winnowill remained in Abode's oceans for looooooooooooooooooooooong
. Brill decided to give birth to her daughter in open waters, despite old cautions
. Dig about what was hinted at about births, among sea elves in OWD
. The same teasing picture shows a VERY aged female human
. Remember there's something called wrapstuff
. Sunstream can find other elves

IN CASE Jink = Korafay wrapstuff would make sense.

Korafay is born in TFQ Prologue.
The Final Quest ist announced as a decades spanning adventure - definitely long enought for Chitter to grow up as a wolfrider.
Jink is shown growing up in the space travelling Palace.

The time discrepancy could (only ?) be explained by Korafay going in wrapstuff as an infant and being "uncocooned" shortly before the takeoff.

Elfmom here: they're filmy little transparent baby fins that echo the shape of her ears.
Water wings indeed - looks as surprising as cute Wink

I'll add some more quotes of Wendy on Facebook - commenting on speculations or answering question around Korafay ...

about being born with webbed hands and feets and fins at all:
Elfmom here - all the different elf tribes have adaptation traits they are able to pass on to their offspring. The Wolfriders pass on acute hearing, sight, sense of smell, etc. The Sun Folk, when they lived in the Sun Village and had the rare child, passed on their adaptive skin coloring, etc. Korafay, born of Recognition between a Wavedancer and a shape-shifted immortal, has little fins...but what else? Time will tell.

about speculation that Korafay might be Jink (posted by another user):
This was asked in the comments on Wendys timeline, and this was the answer: Attention Stefan & Jim - this is not a tease, a red herring or a spoiler. You can take it to the bank: baby Korafay is NOT Jink. Besides, her hair is sea foam green, not white.

about the name Korafay - and a possible soulname:
by Richard: Korafay is the baby's Wavedancer tribe name, not her soul name (assuming she has one). More on that later.

Elfmom here: What's baby Korafay's soul name...or Brill's? Well, as Elfpop and I view 2013 Elfquest canon, the use of soul names is, by and large, a Wolfrider thing. Immortal Sunstream has a soul name because of his early Wolfrider upbringing and whatever genetic heritage from his mortal dad, Cutter, he retains. The Wolfriders are the rugged individualists of the World of Two Moons (yep, even more so than the Go-Backs), requiring soul names to preserve their innermost privacy. Conversely, the Wavedancers are more of one heart and one mind than any other elf tribe. From ancient times they've been deeply dependent on sending for silent communication on the surface or underwater. As a result, they are intimately psychically bonded...a "school" we might say. Anyhow, this is how Richard and I see the Wavedancers today. It makes sense to us...and makes for great story opportunities, too. Wink
As it was clearly pointed out in the comic the Korafay is the girl's tribename I'm still wondering where she will be the exception from the rule - and turns out to have a soulname ... the last remaining heritage of her Wolfrider ancestors.
Just speculation Wink

Elfmom here: a lot of you seem to think Korafay's name is based on 'Coral Fae' (a very reasonable assumption and a pretty one). But 'tis not so. Someday, when the series is finished, Richard and I will tell you how we actually cobbled the name together. We even have an email paper trail to prove it!

RedheadEmber

Korafay, born of Recognition between a Wavedancer and a shape-shifted immortal, has little fins...but what else? Time will tell.

Does that mean Sunstream was "Sunfish" when Korafay was concieved? I thought the answer of recognition happened when he grapped Brill and carried her away in the Palace.

Embala

They answered Recognition in the Palace as you've assumed, Redhead - and because we talk about Recognition Korafay was conceived in this very moment for sure!

But ... Sunstream was already shape-shifted to some degree at this moment - by the Palace. He has grown visibly ... maybe he went throught other, less obvious changes that made him closer to a High One in the process. Possibly this line referes to the years in wrapstuff. Just a thought.

Trollbabe

I know why Korafay has light green hair. There's too much chlorine in the pool.

Oh...that's just wrong... vveg

Trollbabe

Does that mean Sunstream was "Sunfish" when Korafay was concieved?

If so, he had to be careful with those poisonous fins!

lunakat

Just had a thought. When my baby sister was born, my dad had a beard and a moustache. (She called it his "mushbeard"). When she was about two, he shaved it all off. I had never seen my dad without his beard before either, but I didn't freak out (being older). My sister, however, hid under the sink and cried for half a day "bring back my daddy." He just crouched there for hours, trying to convince her "I am your daddy," and telling her she needed to come out. And she would say "then where's your mushbeard?"

How much worse is this point of confusion going to be for little Korafay?

RedheadEmber

I think being able to send and everything might help. Like, I somehow always assumed that elf-children knew what their parents looked like even before they were born...

Embala

That's a fascinating and surprising story, lunakat. I feel for both your baby sister, who was crying for her "lost" Daddy and for your father - he must have felt so helpless! This shave must have made an enourmous difference.
Indeed sending will be a great help in this case. I think Korafay would recognice the love and truth in the sending even when her father looked very different.

Interesting thought about elf children already "knowing" the look of their parents before birth, Redhead., at least to a certain degree. Yes, elves seem to send to their unborn child just like humans talk and sing for it. Even when the abilities are still rudimentary and underdeveloped the child will get feelings and pictures mor proberbly. And with the sendings it can get an image of Mom and Dad - most probably through eyes and mind of the respective partner.

On the other side the parents will not know the real face of their child - because the little one has no idea how it looks like. Maybe - the parents can see the "soul image" ...

Trollbabe

Korafay seems vey advanced, in that she can imitate her mother's cloudfish impression.

Embala

Korafay seems vey advanced, in that she can imitate her mother's cloudfish impression.

from Facebook:
Elfmom here - Wavedancer babies ARE more advanced than other elfin newborns. Like brand new baby dolphins, they're born ready to swim, to play and even to communicate in an infantile fashion. Imitation is the quickest way they learn.

Trollbabe

I wonder if her wingfins will develop just from her forearms, or if they will continue over her shoulders, head and back.

Maybe she can fly like the Submariner.

Will she be a "glider" like Rayek, being able to levitate herself - or a water-walker? Time will tell Wink

from Facebook:

ElfQuest® the official page @Tomyko - the ability to levitate or "float" is not exclusive to the Gliders (leave us not forget Rayek and Widkin etc.). It's one of the "old powers" that all the High Ones originally had.

Argharghargh I wanted to see more of grown-up Korafay! Oh well, January it'll be (or March... January's issue should mostly deal with Wild Hunt, no?). How precious was she as a baby, though? The WaveDancers will spoil her rotten, sure as flying fishes fly! Smile
(Btw, I know I'm just an obsessed nerd who loves to overanalize things, but I'm *totally* seeing her hair and eyes as proof that Haze is the father of Brill and Krill and that makes me deliriously happy :D When I saw her for the first time I thought "awww, she's JUST like her grandfather"... *then* I remembered that Leetah also has green eyes Wink (sorry, Leetah!)

Embala

Green hair - inherited by her grandfather ... havn't thought of this! It would fit. Maybe there is time in TFQ to explore here family tree in some flashbacks. *crossing fingers and toes you will be poved right*

And we will see alot of Korafay in the quest to come ... bet she'll play a prominent role!

ChristinaRaibert

I very much hope so! She promises to be such an interesting character Luvlove

RedheadEmber

Love how it seems that her first reaction to meeting her (other) aunt was

SPLASH!

Of course she had a bit of help from her daddy!

RedheadEmber

Hmm... just realized something: I think it's fairly safe to say that she'll be spoiled rotten growing up.
Not only did her mother spend an unknown (at least to me, Christina; help me here) but rather long period wishing for a child. Korafay is being born to a tribe where the only other "children" are actually older than her dad, and the only child who could potentially have been an age-mate died at a young age.

ChristinaRaibert

Yup, correct about Brill's longing for children of her own - in the WaveDancers Gallery it says that she's "hoping always for the elusive gift of Recognition" (emphasis mine) and the way she speaks to Spine about it all suggest that she dreamed to have children of her own long before the WaveDancers story arc began.

And I agree wholeheartedly about the tribe spoiling her as she grew up. The pips themselves, used for so long to be the youngest WaveDancers, will likely have lavished her with attentions - to say nothing of the adults! :D

Trollbabe

Hre's a possible formula: Compare all of the personalities of the youngest characters (Freetouch, Shukopek, etc.), take whatever personality is left, and assume that's what Korafay is like.

MultiFacets

Nightfall said "Spirits surround me with love" because Tyleet was conceived in the Palace. Does Brill feel the same because Korafay was also conceived in the Palace?

ChristinaRaibert

Probably... remember her words in Discovery? "Beloved... was it not for our child, I could die this moment from sheer joy and become one with the spirits of the Palace." After living in fear and seclusion for so long, the feelings of happiness and love that surrounded the WaveDancers in the Palace must have seemed a breath of fresh air. I'm sure it will play a part in Korafay's character development! ^_^

MultiFacets

I bet you're right. It's a good thing, growing up unafraid of the world.

Can this be Korafay all grown up? Or is it Moonmirror?
I think she looks like a whitehaired Brill, but the cute "wings" is missing, if its Korafay.
Could be an early drawing?

Vaeri

well it certainly LOOKS like a white haired/skilled brill. note the clothing and leg fins. perhaps it was some of Elfmom's fiddling?

If I recall correctly this was originally a picture of Brill in "The Discovery", which got a make-over and was used as a holiday picture. Here's the original (see attachment).

Livie was pretty much the living EQ encyclopedia on th old Scroll. ;)

RedheadEmber

Yeah... I sorta had a feeling I'd seen it before. It's her celebrating recognition pose/dance.

Embala

Not exactly the same pose with differrent coloring though ... I've tried out. ^^

Looking at it now ... this coloring actually works as an imagination of adult Korafay.

ChristinaRaibert

My first actual fan art of Korafay meeting her grandparents (in my opinion. And I won't be shaken from it!)

For me, even her ears shape proves that she's Haze's granddaughter ^^

Tavie

@ChristinaRaibert, I LOVE this. The look on Krill's face may be my favorite thing. Lovely, lovely illustration!

RedheadEmber

That's sweet! :) other grandpa approves.

Uhm... how are spirits holding a baby? =P~

RedheadEmber said: Uhm... how are spirits holding a baby?
... a floater baby ^^
Little Korafay obviously can feel the prescence and love of her grandparents - actually feel them enough to cuddle in their embrace. That's so touching.

An amazing drawing, Christina, dreamy ... beautiful ... full of love. It mirrors the loving family bonds as much as your love for the Wavedancers.

ChristinaRaibert

Thank you ^_^ I couldn't believe I had never drawn Korafay before - and as I had always wanted to depict her with her WaveDancers grandparents, there was my chance ;)

@RedheadEmber - @Embala took the words right off me :) Korafay's floating herself up and reaching out for the spirits she perceives... but she can also feel the loving arms of her grandfather surrounding her in a protective embrace ;;)

(methinks Farbright will soon steal her granddaughter from her lifemate for her own share of Grandma Spoiling Time, just by the way she's looking at her XD)

Thornbrake

Oooooooo! Would love to see your interpretation of a grown up Korafay, @ChristinaRaibert!

ChristinaRaibert

@Thornbrake - already working on it! ;)

Say... speaking of Korafay, today I happened to juxtapose the "older kid" picture of her with the one of Haze and Farbright and went totally :-O because while I had always linked her hair color with Haze, it hadn't struck me thus far that she has the same impish grin of her grandmother! I kid you not, check that smirk and the mischievious look in the eyes - she's a mini Farbright with more than a little of Haze thrown in! So cute! :)

Embala

Looking forward to see your new drawing, Christina!

You can really see a family ressemblance ... the same cuteness. I hope you are right!

Tavie

Look what Wendy just posted! Look what Wendy just posted!

RichardPini

Wendy's comment to go along with this image: "At last a Wavedancer born without fear, because her parents saw to it that she was raised with wisdom, good cheer and common sense. Lovely Korafay doesn't see herself as a teacher, but sometimes we teach simply by being. Sometimes, in portraying characters whose main focus is the practicality of mere survival, it's important to show the more magical side. These ARE elves, f'goodness sake!"

Tavie

Sorry, I should've included! I did link back to the post but I forgot not everyone has Facebook.

Heather

Line of beauty all the way!

Embala

What a breathtaking drawing!

A beautiful spirited cub. Very elfy. Very alive. An etherial appearance and and true child of Abode, settled in her natural environment. Wonderful characterisation for a very promising character ... looking forward to meet her in the Final Quest!

RedheadEmber

Lovely! B-)

travelbug

Wow, she's gorgeous :)

Is she a wolfrider's hight? Or a bit taller?
She doesn't look wavedancer tall to me

RedheadEmber

Why wouldn't she be? After all; both her parents are Wavedancer-tall.

ChristinaRaibert

travelbug said: Is she a wolfrider's hight? Or a bit taller?

If she's just 20-something at the time of the picture and it's not another flashback, it might make sense that she's not as tall as Brill and Sunstream. With WaveDancers being immortals, at 20 she'd still be a "pip" (remember Brill's words about Sunstream and the tribe's piplings?), even if mentally she's probably far older, much like her father. So it's not improbable that her body reflects this, developing to a WaveDancer height in much longer time than, say, Chitter/Freetouch, who is already the same height of the adult Wolfriders.

My two cents...

And of course you know "who" she reminds me of ;) Even the "springy" locks, while clearly fashioned after Sunstream's, immediately made me think of Haze. Although in the eyebrows I can definitely see some Cutter now, not just Farbright.

MultiFacets

She's gonna be a real heartbreaker when she's an adult.

Tam

She may seem taller when we see the full image...this is only a snippet of the cover of Issue #8. Maybe she's further in the background.

RedheadEmber

MultiFacets said: She's gonna be a real heartbreaker when she's an adult.

She is an adult. At least if she's matured at the same rate as her father.

travelbug

I was thinking she seems to have inherited Sun folk/wolfrider hight, and is grown up by now.

Tavie

.

Tavie

I guess she's grey-eyed instead of green-eyed?

korafay

travelbug

I agree, looks like her colors gave been toned down a bit.

I would love it if she has green eyes :)
Not very many elves has, I think. Right now I can only think of Leetha, Redlance and Kahvi.
And Timmain already went from green to grey eyes.

Thornbrake

I don't know, it's a little hard to tell the exact color from the new illustration. Gray and green aren't too far off from each other, and the surrounding colors can influence the way you perceive them.

ChristinaRaibert

Thornbrake said: don't know, it's a little hard to tell the exact color from the new illustration. Gray and green aren't too far off from each other, and the surrounding colors can influence the way you perceive them.

Or it could just be that the picture is unfinished ;) I for one believe the rocks in the background are eventually going to be colored, as the rest of the scenery. It might be just the same with Korafay's eyes ^^

Tam

If she's also not the main focus of the image (this is just a snippet), the colors might be a little more washed out due to distance.

RedheadEmber

Maybe her eyes change colour depending on her mood; in the first (oldest) she's very excited because she's about to meet 'Aunt Ember' for the first time. While in the second she's more serene.
Though, Christina's point about the picture simply being unfinished fits as well; after all, doubt her libs have suddenly gone completely skin-coloured.

Embala

Water can "pale down" colors as well. She's floating in the air in the youth picture ... I got the notion she's in water in the new one.

ChristinaRaibert

Embala said: Water can "pale down" colors as well. She's floating in the air in the youth picture ... I got the notion she's in water in the new one.

Good point there too. I hadn't noticed the slight slime on the rocks, and I bet that by the time the pic is finished, her eyes will glow too :) Then the difference in height might be also due to the angle if she's swimming toward us, the viewer (or whatever character is placed in front of her) - making her head appear larger and her limbs somewhat shorter due to the distorted perspective.

travelbug

Korafay being under water and drawing not being quite finished does make sense :)

Rob

Pike's eyes are described variously as cornflower blue (gatherums), gray-blue (novel), blue (interview) and that they "sparkle purple" (wolfrider's guide) -- and are painted in every way. Inconsistent? Not really. Look at your eyes in the mirror: lots of different colors for the light to bring out (or to average out) depending on the conditions.

RedheadEmber

Rob said: and that they "sparkle purple"
