Despite this page’s melodramatic title, there has never been a conflict between Richard and Wendy Pini, or their company Warp Graphics, and Marvel Comics. A brief text history of ElfQuest‘s various paths to publication can be found here on this very website.
Early in 2024, however, a YouTuber who goes by the name of matttt (matt with 4 ts) contacted Wendy and Richard to produce a documentary video. While the very broad strokes of the story are well known (they approached both Marvel and DC Comics, were rejected, and so started their own enterprise), no interviewer previously had gone into the depth that matttt wanted to explore.
So one afternoon in February, Wendy and Richard opened their home and the video recording began. The Q&A ran for nearly 5 hours. Matttt asked all kinds of questions from very broad to deeply personal. And got answers as candid as the inquiries.
A few days later, matttt let the Pinis know that usually his interviews, after editing, ran to about 20 minutes. Theirs, he said, he couldn’t trim to less than 45 minutes, there was that much “meat” to the discussion. Wendy and Richard consider it one of the very best looks back at how they started and where they’ve come.
