it depends a little on what you want to scan. If it is a full color image, it may be a different matter, but as an amateur doing simple line art I'd say that my cheap lexmark all-in-one does a fine job of capturing all my mistakes. The trick is using the right settings (greyscale), and high enough definition, so that is more software than hardware related. There's usually a hidden user settings panel that allows you to select higher dpi settings. This should be 600, at the very least.
